KINGSLEY GRAD LEARNING GOVERNMENT FIRSTHAND

May 28, 2009

In the fall Josh Barnhart will begin his sophomore year at Grand Valley State University, but the 2008 Kingsley High School graduate isn't waiting until then to continue building a career in public service.

Barnhart began an internship with state Rep. Wayne Schmidt in May and will work until August at the state Capitol in Lansing. Schmidt said he has been impressed with the interest Barnhart has shown in legislative and constituent work.

"Josh is doing a great job for the people of the 104th District," Schmidt said. "He has been a valuable asset to have in the office. When he is assigned a task you don't have to worry about it getting done because he not only completes it, but goes above and beyond."

Those intern responsibilities include five days a week answering telephone calls from constituents and responding to their needs and requests, doing general office management duties and assisting Schmidt on legislative issues as needed.

It's not surprising Barnhart has risen to the challenge of helping serve the constituents of Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties.

During his high school years he was on student council and actively served his school and community through various organizations and events.

At Grand Valley, Barnhart is studying political science and public administration while serving on the university's student senate. He also is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

"I appreciate Rep. Schmidt offering me the chance to get involved in politics at this level, and it's especially satisfying since I'm working with people and issues from where I grew up," Barnhart said. "This opportunity is allowing me to give back some of the service and support my community gave me growing up."

Barhart is the son of Ray and Deb Barnhart.
