MARY’S LAW SIGNED INTO LAWJuly 10, 2008 Domestic violence victims in Michigan can now be alerted by satellite technology if their abuser gets nearby under legislation signed into law today, Rep. Bill Caul announced. The new state law, known as Mary's Law, gives Michigan courts the framework to require domestic violence suspects to wear a GPS device that will automatically send an alarm to the victim if the abuser is nearby. The 2007 death of Mary Babb in Mount Pleasant and the arrest of her estranged husband on murder charges prompted Caul to introduce the legislation. Thomas Daniel Babb of Gaylord had been charged with several felony assault charges against his wife and was awaiting trial on those charges when Mary Lynn Babb was killed. "Not only will Mary's Law better protect domestic violence victims in the future, Mary's story will not be forgotten because her law is now part of the fabric of our system of justice," said Caul, of Mount Pleasant. Caul received word today from the governor's office that the bill had been signed and will be filed today. The governor's office also said Gov. Granholm will schedule a formal bill-signing ceremony with Mary's family in the future. |
