REP. ROGERS TO LEAD HOUSE BIPARTISAN FRESHMAN CAUCUS

February 24, 2009

The first-ever Michigan House Bipartisan Freshman Caucus, led by local Rep. Bill Rogers, met for the first time today in an effort to heal the partisan rancor in Lansing and work together to help the state of Michigan.

The state House has 46 new Republican and Democrat lawmakers, one of the largest classes of freshman lawmakers in the history of the Legislature. Rogers, who was selected as chair of the caucus, said the group's main purpose is to help new lawmakers develop a level of friendship, which will ultimately encourage more effective government.

"We want to ensure that through the process of resolving the immense problems of Michigan, we know each other on a level that presents civility and camaraderie even when we disagree on policy issues," said Rogers, R-Brighton. "We must look beyond partisanship and philosophical divides in order to help people and strengthen Michigan's future."

With the tone of cooperation already existing between the House Republican and Democrat leadership offices, Rogers said he is hopeful the 95th Legislature can be remembered for its ability to steer Michigan away from economic calamity and unnecessary bickering.

"We all know that R&D stands for research and development, a key component that drives our economy and creates jobs," Rogers said. "But R&D also stands for Republicans and Democrats, and we all must work together cohesively as well if we want to fix Michigan's economy. The bipartisan caucus is a huge positive step in the right direction."

The caucus will have ongoing meetings throughout the legislative session.
