WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE MUST ALSO BE GOOD FOR CONGRESS

June 25, 2009

As Washington begins discussing a government takeover of health care in this country, state Rep. Ken Horn wants to make sure members of Congress live under the same terms of care they plan to apply to the public.

As the U.S. Office of Personnel Management notes, members of Congress enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country.

"It would be an outrage if members of Congress inflicted a system of rationed health care, took away choice of doctors, and chose to exempt themselves," said Horn, R-Frankenmuth. "Michigan residents deserve better."

Horn introduced a House resolution urging Congress to make sure public employees and elected officials use the same health care benefits the public would use. Discussions are being held in Washington over ways to dramatically alter the nation's health care system.

"With various forms of nationalized health care system being discussed in Washington, it is imperative that decision-makers understand, and be comfortable living with, the same terms of care that they would apply to the public," Horn said. "Whenever politicians don't have to live under the policies they create, there is the potential for a lack of understanding of the impact on individuals, families, organizations and businesses."

The health care coverage afforded members of Congress is far different than that available to most Americans. Horn said the economic realities confronting main street businesses are similarly removed in most situations from those found in the halls of government.

Horn's resolution will be sent to the U.S. Senate, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
