LAWMAKER WANTS PEOPLE PROTECTED IN THE EVENT OF STATE SHUTDOWNSeptember 22, 2009 With only eight days to go before a potential state government shutdown, Rep. Ken Horn today introduced legislation to protect Michigan residents from any fees or charges due to the state work stoppage. Horn's legislation gives residents a grace period to renew licenses, and allows businesses to continue to operate under existing permits. "I am personally working hard to prevent a state government shutdown, but in hoping for the best we must also prepare for the worst," said Horn, R-Frankenmuth. "As the clock continues to tick, we must prepare for every scenario, and Michigan residents shouldn't be punished for Lansing's inability to reach a budget agreement." Horn's bill would ensure the following: - Driver licenses and license plates would not expire. Drivers would have five days after government opens to renew tabs and licenses; - Filing deadlines for state benefits would be extended, including unemployment, health care and retirement benefits; - Lack of state government inspections cannot shut your place of employment; and - Michigan casinos would continue to provide $450,000 per day to state and local tax rolls. "The House-Senate budget deal to protect essential services without raising taxes is a promising development, but the governor has not signed off on the idea yet," Horn said. "Michigan residents shouldn't be penalized for something out of their control. This is a rational bill to help deal with an irrational situation."
