OPSOMMER SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN PARENTAL RIGHTS REGARDING BABYSITTINGOctober 15, 2009 Mid-Michigan residents can help a friend or neighbor without facing repercussions from state government under legislation co-sponsored today by Rep. Paul Opsommer that exempts babysitting from the state's day-care regulations. In a case that drew international attention, a Middleville mother last month was ordered by the state to stop watching neighborhood children before they got on the school bus because she was not a licensed day-care provider. Under House Bill 5514, Michigan residents who babysit a non-dependent child are exempt from day care rules as long as they are not engaged in a child care business. "Government should never interfere with a parent's decision to place their children in the care of a trusted friend or neighbor," said Opsommer, R-DeWitt. "It's outrageous that state government, in its infinite wisdom, decided to go after this Michigan mother. Our legislation will help make sure it doesn't happen again." Opsommer is advocating for quick action on the legislation, which received strong bipartisan support. |
